Diamonds are humanity’s most enduring treasure. Formed over three billion years ago, they are nature’s most precious gift. The beauty of a diamond does not lie solely in the eye of the beholder. There are objective criteria by which the value of a diamond can be determined: the 5 Cs.
The carat specification refers to the weight of a diamond. This unit of weight and the term carat go back to a completely natural unit of measurement: the seed of the carob tree, because in the past diamonds were actually weighed using these seeds. Today, one carat corresponds exactly to a weight of 0.20 grams. One carat is divided into 100 points. A diamond with 50 points therefore weighs half a carat (0.50 ct). However, the carat weight alone does not determine the value of a diamond. Two diamonds with an identical carat value can differ in value, since clarity, color, and cut also play an important role.
When it comes to evaluating a diamond’s color, it is essentially about assessing how close it comes to being “colorless.” The more colorless and white a diamond appears, the more valuable it is. The scale ranges from D (colorless and particularly rare) to Z (tinted). At the same time, nature has also produced diamonds that are distinguished by particularly intense and pure colors. These are the rare “Fancy Colours” diamonds, which are likewise especially precious.
Flawless diamonds are an absolute rarity. Most diamonds have tiny inclusions, often referred to as nature’s individual fingerprint. A diamond’s clarity is determined by how many inclusions or blemishes it has. The purer and higher the quality of the diamond, the fewer inclusions it will show. As a rule, inclusions up to and including clarity grade si are not visible to the naked eye.
In contrast to the other evaluation criteria that are determined by nature, the cut lies in human hands. Only a perfect cut can ignite the diamond’s fascinating fire. For the incoming light to be refracted at the optimal angle and reflected in a concentrated way, proportions and arrangement are crucial. If the cut is too deep or too shallow, the beam of light is lost. Only a diamond with an optimal cut can unfold its magical brilliance and achieve the desired total reflection.
Trust is the key word when it comes to diamonds. As the evaluation criteria described above show, not all diamonds are the same, and only the highest quality standards guarantee maximum brilliance. The fifth C, which stands for trust, above all also requires that the supply chain of the diamonds is conflict-free and transparent. Only diamonds from trustworthy sources are mined, cut and traded under socially, environmentally and ethically responsible conditions. This is why Rubin uses exclusively diamonds from certified sources.
